The International Year of Water Cooperation:
Restore Our Water International aims to make a global issue local
World Water Day is held annually on March 22rd as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. 2013 has been declared as the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation.
Restore Our Water International (ROWI) is a non-profit organization concerned with the unfolding crisis of rapidly declining water levels in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence basin. Mary Muter, Sierra Club’s Great Lakes Section Chair and ROWI Spokesperson, is extremely knowledgeable about Great Lakes issues and has worked proactively with a broad coalition of organizations and individuals to address environmental impacts.... Great Lakes organizations alarmed with the International Joint Commission’s “Adaptive Management” advice instead of dealing with a significant cause of the record-setting low water levels on Lakes Michigan/Huron/Georgian Bay
TORONTO, ON – February 4, 2013 - As water levels in Lakes Michigan, Huron and Georgian Bay set new monthly record lows, the International Joint Commission (IJC) has recently sent signals that it will ignore the public’s concern and request for a viable solution, announcing instead a ‘Great Lakes Regional Adaptive Management Plan’.

The time to act to restore our water level is now

The International Joint Commission (IJC) was told Monday that a “do nothing” approach to restore the water levels of Lakes Michigan-Huron and Georgian Bay is unacceptable.
Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton joined Great Lakes advocate Mary Muter of the Sierra Club and scores of North Simcoe residents in calling on the IJC to act.
The commission is an independent binational body established by the United States and Canada under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909.... Read more »

The need for a pan-Canadian water strategy in Canada has become extremely urgent. Across the nation, Canadians are recognizing that limits to this seemingly infinite resource exist. The evidence of these intense pressures is manifesting in a visibly changing climate, the degradation of our environment, health problems in Canadian communities, and the tensions surrounding the use of boundary waters with our neighbours to the south.
