Jobs

SIERRA CLUB PRAIRIE CHAPTER ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR
Edmonton, Alberta

This is a full-time position for one year with attractive benefits package and the possibility of extension. Position Priorities The Prairies region faces a myriad of environmental challenges. The development of the vast tar sands reserves in northern Alberta – and potentially Saskatchewan – are having far-reaching impacts on watersheds, airsheds, biodiversity and human health across the region and beyond. Finite water resources in the region are increasingly stressed by growing water demand and the impact of industrial pollution and climate change. Governments are failing to implement real solutions to the dire threat of climate change, including a transition to a green, sustainable economy, instead focusing on unsustainable or unproven approaches including clean coal, carbon capture and storage, and nuclear power, often over the objections of local communities.

The Prairie Chapter Associate Director will work with the Director in providing overall leadership in the development, implementation and administration of the Sierra Club Prairie’s vision, strategic planning, programs and activities, with a specific focus on the current campaign priorities of energy and water. The Associate Director would be responsible for running the RePower Alberta campaign, calling for a Green Energy Strategy in Alberta (repoweralberta.ca).

This role includes acting as the public face of the organization, and maintaining relationships with government representatives, the news media, the general public, as well as with members, supporters, and local groups. The Prairie Chapter Associate Director is responsible for fundraising and marketing for the Sierra Club Prairie office, including staff and volunteer management and in maintaining the financial viability of the Chapter through overseeing fundraising efforts and ensuring timely financial accountability.

Candidate Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in environment, water and energy issues in Canada and/or the Prairie Provinces. Experience and knowledge specific to green energy is especially beneficial. Experience with various levels of government and policy development, as well as familiarity with working with media is an asset. The candidate will have proven leadership and communications skills and the abilities and a passion for inspiring grassroots engagement (including experience in volunteer management, workshop facilitation and event planning).

Proven experience in fundraising, marketing and non-profit management is beneficial. A strong personal commitment for justice and sustainability is essential.

Equivalent life experience or post-secondary degree in a sustainability related discipline. (ie. biological and/or ecological sciences, political science, law, economics, or social sciences) is desired.

The Prairie Chapter Associate Director reports to the Sierra Club of Canada Prairie Chapter Executive Committee (ExComm) and to the national Board of Directors through the National Office senior management team.

Remuneration
This is a salaried position, pro-rated at $40,000 per year and includes an attractive benefits package.

Deadline
To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume by July 15th to Sheila@sierraclub.ca.
We would like to thank all those who applied, but only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

About Sierra Club Canada
Sierra Club Canada has been active in Canada since 1963. The national office of Sierra Club Canada was established in Ottawa in 1989.

In 1992, Sierra Club Canada was incorporated to create a truly national presence for what had previously been Canadian chapters within the U.S.-based Sierra Club. We have active chapters in every region of Canada, with offices in Ottawa, Victoria, Sydney, Corner Brook, Halifax, Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto.

Sierra Club Canada is the agent of Sierra Club Canada Foundation, a registered charitable organization with the Canada Revenue Agency. Sierra Club Canada has several major national campaigns with four program areas: Health and Environment, Protecting Biodiversity, Atmosphere and Energy, and Transition to a Sustainable Economy.

Today, Sierra Club Canada has approximately 10,000 members, supporters, and youth affiliate members across Canada. Our members are volunteers who work in club campaign activities, as well as outings and club development.

The Prairie Chapter was founded in 1995 and has since been working to accomplish our mission to develop a well-trained, knowledgeable network of community leaders who are working to protect the integrity of our Prairie ecosystems. We continue our aim to do this by engaging and activating communities on issues of critical importance that will either provide solutions to, or challenge obstacles in, ensuring sustainable and healthy communities for future generations. We will accomplish this mission and move towards our vision of healthy communities sustained by healthy ecosystems by achieving the following overarching goals:

To be proactive advocates for the environment by ensuring public knowledge of and sound public policy implementation in the Sierra Club Canada’s four priority areas: Energy Solutions, Conservation and Biodiversity, Healthy Communities and Sustainable Economies.

To support the development of engaged and knowledgeable communities by offering training's, education, research and capacity building opportunities to volunteers, members, Sierra Club groups, citizens and community organizations.

The Prairie Chapter currently has active volunteer groups, including: The Chinook Group out of Calgary, and the Edmonton Urban Issues Committee. Each Group focuses on local issues important to their community.

We have an excellent reputation within our constituency and externally for refusing to compromise our ideals for convenience or for comfort, and for taking risks when necessary. We have an excellent, developed media presence, and we are equally comfortable in a minister’s office as at a kitchen table with a group of activist fishermen. We can do more with a little than most ever do with much.
